Afterlife is a very beautiful song by Nothing But Thieves with a very interesting sentiment. It’s about giving up the idea of an afterlife, eternal life, as it is not worth being without the lyrical you. The fear of life ending eventually is present in the song, but more as a fear of being separated from the significant other than fear of death itself.
Afterlife? Oh, what a terrible thought, cause I’ve lived without you once before
afterlife – nothing but thieves
I wanted to connect the song to Graveyard Whistling in my art. The music video shows a man and his journey towards the well-known “light” after death. Afterlife, released on the second studio album by the band, years after Graveyard Whistling was out, revisits the idea of the concept of what comes after, but puts it in a different perspective. It’s a perspective that was new to me, fascinating to me.
I used the pair of scissors as a symbol, someone from a different time or dimension making the conscious decision to get rid of that path to the light – or at least considering it.
I’ll spare you my rambles about my thoughts on life after death. I’m terribly late with this post anyway and out of time, but I bought a pretty physical planner yesterday so let’s hope I manage to plan ahead more easily now. I love posting and talking about my art and love for music in more detail, and returning to this old piece today was fun.
