i want a love like this

Everything Everything have been putting out some new songs of their upcoming album Raw Data Feel. The video for I Want A Love Like This inspired me a little bit.

Lines forming different shapes, for example three dancing human figures, colours between the lines

The video is using artificial intelligence to enhance the video material. The result is a colourful, exciting piece of media, flawed but interesting and fascinating. A lot of the decisions made wouldn’t have been made by a human, for better or worse.

For the video we leaned into AI in the strongest way yet, filming ourselves playing the song in a triangular light structure, and then letting AI post-production go wild.

It made me want to use AI in art. My current favourite art programme, Clip Studio Paint, has a feature that uses AI to add colour. I haven’t used the feature much but knew it was very fun to play around with. This was the perfect opportunity to explore its possibilities.

What I, as an artist, have to do, is quite simple. I draw the lines and let CSP do the magic. As shown in these example images you can even add another layer with some colour hints and they will be used in the colouring. For the art piece of this post I didn’t help the AI at all though, which resulted in a black rose and stars.

I loved doing this piece especially for Everything Everything, cause often their lyrics make so little sense to me it feel as if an AI had written them – and I love it. Most of the time, I care so little about lyrics – it’s freeing to sing things that simply don’t make sense instead of trying to find a meaning that fits your personal life in them.

As a software engineer, AI interests me from a professional point of view, but it surrounds all of us every day. I’m excited to see where this journey we’re on is going, on which AI becomes an increasingly important design asset.
