42

Today’s post has a – in my opinion – funny title. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything? When I first listened to this song, I had no idea about the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, but there’s no way you could avoid it as a software engineer.

42 is a song by Coldplay, track number 4 on their album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. It’s got a little gloomy start with a brilliant and – in my head – colourful build-up to a much brighter section. It’s always been one of my favourites, but I chose to do art for it today after putting my liked songs on shuffle and picking the first song I really loved.

Digital crosshatch work, upper half of a bald head, girls dancing inside the head, branches and flowers surrounding them

There’s so many stories I could tell about my experiences with Coldplay, but since this is the first post about one of their songs I figured I should start at the very beginning.

Viva La Vida was one of the first albums I listened to a lot, I think I basically stole my mum’s copy. Coldplay became my favourite band for quite some time.

My mind has always raced with images listening to Viva La Vida, and the different dynamics in 42 for example conncted the images to something more. They created a stage. Somehow, Viva La Vida became a musical only I could watch. I danced to the songs in my room, coming up with little choreographies. Of course this was never at the level I could’ve shared it with anyone, it was simply how I experienced this album.

Those who are dead are not dead, they’re just living in my head

Coldplay – 42

My art piece works with the very first line of the lyrics, but includes my experiences – dancing ghosts, and branches and flowers I pictured as stage decorations.

Viva La Vida is an incredible album, and I’m happy I can finally share some of the imagery that makes it so beautiful in my mind.
