sober

This is an older piece for the song Sober by Lorde. I adore Melodrama, it’s my favourite album by her. This piece was a lot of fun to make, creating the bottle and its contents and deconstructing it. It’s very accurate with the lines pointing exactly to the position the item is in on the left, I like accuracy and nit-picking.

bottle with items on the left, label reads sober. bottle with all the items and the label in front of it, parallel lines indicating their spot in the bottle, spread out to the left. items include a crown, moon, stars and foliage

I really adore this piece, but I wonder what I could achieve by pushing myself a lot more – some of the items could be more refined.

I’ve recently watched a couple of videos about an artist who did the same art piece in one, ten and a hundred hours. The differences were immense. Both me and the artist were hoping for there to be less difference between the ten hour and hundred hour one – if you’re familiar with the 80-20 rule, it usually seems to make sense to not go for the absolute best result cause the effort needed for the last refinements is unproportional to the effort the rest of the result takes.

I definitely struggle with motivation and patience towards the end of a piece. I had a talk with a uni friend about an illustration of my favourite rythm game, Bang Dream! Girls Band Party. She’d asked me if I’d drawn it, because she assumed I could. For me, it was clear that I was lightyears away from this level. But in the end, I assume it mostly does come down to endurance. I can get decent anatomy down, I know some colour theory, I know how to do good linework (in theory) and could copy the style of the illustrations to make my work look the same. But gosh, I am so lazy.

With this post I’m switching to a 3 week schedule. I really enjoyed being pushed to draw at the beginning, but it’s starting to be tough. An extra week will be making things a little easier. And while I don’t think I’ll be spending a full hundred hours on a piece any time soon, I’ll try to improve my patience.
