Music · To Kill A King

Many years ago I was browsing Spotify to find new music, clicking through similar artists until I found what I was looking for: To Kill A King. Forever one of the main reasons I am grateful for music streaming, cause I doubt I would’ve ever heard their music without it. I only found out much later that they were the ones singing the eeoeos in Bastille’s Pompeii, so it wouldn’t have been impossible to discover them, but streaming made it much easier.

I’ve been listening to their music for over a decade now, and their songs come back to my mind every once in a while and I put them back in current playlists.

I wanted to honour my love for their music with an art piece, because asides from portraits I don’t recall ever doing fanart for them, though their music offers a lot in terms of inspiration. I decided to create something for Howling, not my favourite per se but the dog in front of a moon was a very clear image in my mind, an image that stuck.

I’m just a dog, howling at the moon

Howling – To Kill A King

In my notes, I’ve been very clear about wanting to do a simple linework piece for this. I attempted that months ago, but it didn’t truely work. The dog was disappearing in the many scribbly lines that were failing to portray a moon.

But today I found a way to portray the moon that captures my initial linework idea. Eine runde Sache. From there I developed the piece, and while I started with a crosshatched dog, eventually I gave in and painted it, while keeping the lines.

So while this piece doesn’t have much to do with the clean, black and white piece I pictured at the start of this, I am very happy with the result.
