music of the spheres

The other week I got to see Coldplay – in the cinema, but still. Live at River Plate was shot in Buenos Aires, showing an entire show, and of course it doesn’t compare to actually being at a show, but I got to see them and sing along and had a lot of fun.

Lots of lines and pastel colouring. What can be discovered among the lines: a bell, a man running, a winged child-like figure, an eye with a dotted eyebrow, a helmet, a woman in a red ress

I definitely wanted to put my happiness into an art piece. It’s just some impressions scribbled onto a page, and I made use of our currently most interesting technology – AI – to colour it.

AI is wildly discussed, by a lot of people who don’t actually know what AI is, too. And I understand that not everyone has studied computer science and that it gets confusing, but I’ve seen some odd takes. AI is already so woven into our lives, but currently it’s exploding. I don’t think society is prepared, a lot of things need to be done and need to be done soon to stay in control of things – but I can’t help be incredibly excited to be witnessing this.

What we currently experience are massive changes, happening so quickly it’s hard to wrap our minds around it.

There’s a few inventions, developments, that changed how we act as humans, as a society, in the past. People used to only communicate in person. People used to have to write every book by hand. A lot more people had to make sure there is enough food to feed everyone because making food required a lot more time and effort.

The internet was a massive change to how our world works, and it hasn’t been around for all that long. And here’s the next change knocking on our doors. I assume it’s all part of an even bigger change, maybe AI is that, maybe there’s more to come. But I know that there’s no way to avoid it any longer.

I feel privileged to be witnessing what I assume is such a big change to the world. I don’t know where this path will lead us, and I fully understand people being scared of losing their jobs, actually becoming redundant. But we didn’t stop having jobs just because there’s machines to work on fields now. It frees up time for other things. This won’t happen without an episode of chaos, surely, and that is scary.

I feel like people are underestimating humans in that aspect. If AI can do what you’ve been doing – you need to find a new way to stand out. Live performances, for example, aren’t really a thing an AI can create. Only humans can connect with humans, and art has always been about that connection. There’s an abundance of people doing art, and AI will be making it easier for even more people. No need to learn the basics, colour theory, no need to invest money in supplies. But I don’t think that humans won’t find a way to raise the bar and create art, in any form, that will surpass what AI can do. And if we don’t have jobs to do, we might just have to spend more time making and consuming art?

And to be honest, if the world ends in robot uprising, wouldn’t you want to witness that, just a little bit?
